The golden rule verses the platinum rule
The golden rule : Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. When I was teaching on the Golden Rule one time someone shouted that the Golden Rule was old hat and there is a new rule called the Platinum Rule.
I immediately got riled up. If I wasn’t teaching on being nice to people I might have given him a piece of my mind. One of my personal alarms I set for my self is never criticize or condemn anyone, especially if I don’t have the facts .So I looked up Platinum Rule to hunt down this heretic.
After researching this guy on line and spending two or three seconds of his subject The Platinum Rule and saw that he wrote a book by the same title, I knew I had to put an end to his heresy. I knew I had to publicly criticize his book. I didn’t think the author of the Golden Rule wanted me to defend him or needed me to defend him, but I wanted to and was going to do it.
Only one problem a little alarm kept going off in my heart. This alarm is my conscience telling me when I am doing something wrong. I hit the snooze button a few times; after all I built my career on The Golden rule and often thought that would be the title to my book. He had no right to bash my precious Golden Rule.
So the final alarm in my heart going off was the one I set years ago, not to ever criticize a book without reading it. Darn it my inner man was about to win again. Just in case you’re wondering, jealousy, condemnation, envy and revenge are not fruits of the Spirit. I was in a war with my ego. My inner man and my ego were waging a war and they were both trying to win over my mind and actions.
Who wins in a fight like this you ask? The one you follow. The one you give the most power to. Your ego or your outward and lower self or your inward man of your heart, your higher self; we choose.
But hey I have a higher cause here I am going to be the defender of The Golden Rule. I had already read that Dr. Alessandra, you guessed it another alarm went off, I found out he has a PH.D, so I am guided by my heart to show respect, anyway I read on the internet words like the golden rule is not panacea. And the first chapter was “has the golden rule lost its glitter?” Not knowing the word I looked it up, panacea means a cure-all. And he says the golden rule is not a cure-all, that did it higher self or not I was getting ready for battle.
But first I had to order the book. I wasn’t about to pay good money for this book, so I asked my wife to buy it on line, Amazon, used copy that is. You are probably wondering why I didn’t borrow the book, another alarm, books should be bought not borrowed, and this is a way of paying the author I always felt. The alarm didn’t say it couldn’t be used, although the alarm was set before amazon was created, what a quandary I am in. I must defend the Golden Rule without breaking it.
So I was preparing for a message and I was going to use the golden rule as my theme. This would also be my first time battling the idea of the platinum rule; actually it would be the first time battling anyone. I have never battled anyone before; I always followed The Golden Rule. I found myself violating the very rule that I am defending.
We have two faces and we need to set alarms to know how to behave. I was in a battle of my inward man of my heart and my outer man with emotions and ego. But I had a cause.
As I prepared my message on the golden rule, knowing that I could read the book the Platinum Rule right before my talk, my conscience would be good. I knew there could possibly be anything in the book that would change my mind.
But I needed some ammo to go after the book. And it hit me as high as gold prices are, I was sure that gold would cost more than platinum. That was my ammo, talk about the high cost of gold. I could frame the argument that the golden rule has been around six thousand years. I could ask the crowd, I would be speaking to four groups in a four week span, I could ask each group if they have even heard of the platinum rule, my guess very little. Then I could ask who’s heard of the golden rule, I knew all have. Then I could seal the deal with the high cost of gold verses platinum. So I looked up gold prices and platinum and at that time platinum was fifteen hundred dollars an ounce and gold was a mere thirteen hundred dollars an ounce.
He had me . As I was preparing for my message and I was looking at the script in front of me “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” It hit me the author of the golden rule wasn’t talking about gold or silver. He wasn’t talking about gold or platinum. He wasn’t talking about gold at all. The author of the golden rule was saying, “How you treat people is golden.”
So I looked up the word golden. Golden means : advantageous, auspicious, blessed, blest, favorable, favored, fortunate, gilded, happy, prosperous bright, encouraging, hopeful, lucky, promising, prosperous, rosy enjoying the bliss of heaven!
Golden has nothing to do with gold. Our purpose should not be to strive to receive gold or money but to strive to be happy, blest and be at peace and to treat people like we want to be treated. When I talk like this the poverty and lack minded people cry out, “yeah money is the root of all evil and money is bad.” They say “money can’t buy you happiness.” I say back “money might not buy you happiness but it makes a good down payment,” and I also say “money may not buy happiness but the lack of it sure makes you miserable.”
People misquote and say that money is the root of all evil. In reality it was written the love of money is the root of all evil, and in the times that, that was written, it did not mean loving money was bad. The authors of that writing meant if you love money more than honesty that is evil. If you love money more than integrity, that is evil. If you love money more than people, love, health, freedom, country, faith, God, your fellow man and more than the golden rule that is evil.
I believe money is good and the more we have the more good we can do. I believe money is a token of our life. We trade our time and effort for money. Then we trade our money for what is important to us. So I ask how much time and efforts are you trading for money? And what do you spend that money on? What is important to you, what do you value? “So where your treasure is, there will your heart be also, so lay your treasures in heaven!”
We should not work for money, we should work for our true purpose and our why. Why are we here, what is our purpose, what our gifts? Bob Ferrol once said he does not work for money; money is a result of what he does. Suzie Orman says People first, money second and things third. Oprah says your work is your platform to share with the world your gift. Simon Sinick says that your work is your megaphone to share your why with the world. When it comes right down to it our work should be how we help others and the result is we make money.
The word golden means important, I think the author of the golden rule meant the most important rule is how you treat people. So I asked myself in preparation to defend the golden rule. What is the golden rule and what is the platinum rule?
The golden rule, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. What is the platinum rule? “Do unto others as they want you to do to them.” I said to myself “really Dr. Alessandra, that’s the platinum rule? Every time I read or typed his name my heart was stirring, I sensed a kinship, but knew I couldn’t be friends with someone degrading the golden rule. My heart reminded me I hadn’t even read the book, I said it didn’t matter I had my facts.
So I imaginarily asked Dr. Alessandra do you really think that the golden rule meant, if I love loud rock and roll music at seven A.M., and I live in an apartment that has paper thin walls, and my neighbor works the midnight shift, that I am supposed to blast the music, because I liked it. I said to my new imaginary friend, that is not the golden rule. The golden rule never meant if you love fresh coffee and your wife hates coffee but loves orange juice; give her coffee because you like it.
No, no Doctor, the golden rule always meant do unto others as you would want them to do to unto you if you were them in their shoes. Treat them with mercy and grace and do not judge.
If you hate fresh coffee and they love it, give them fresh coffee as if you were them and you loved fresh coffee. That is what the golden rule is! I shouted the golden rule is the platinum rule!
Then I got the book. To my chagrin, Dr. Alessandra had over twenty four authors praising the book in the forward. All my favorite authors like Dr. Wayne Dyer, Jack Canfield just to name two. The only two people that weren’t listed were Mother Teresa and the author of the golden rule, other than those two every awesome author praised his book.
By the fourth page Dr. Alessandra said the platinum rule is the spirit of the golden rule and is not at odds with the golden rule. I was so happy. I did not have to violate the golden rule and I did not have to defend it. The book the Platinum Rule is a great book and I tell everybody to read it.
I am so glad I had set the alarms in my heart to know which face to wear. I would have been dead wrong to speak against the book. Most of the time we criticize or condemn, we are probably wrong. Most of the times we only see the bad and talk about what is wrong with someone we are probably wrong. Our lower self is ruling us. We are seeking a golden egg instead of pursuing a golden goose.
