The little things
It’s the little things
It is the little things we do that matter the most. It is not the one big thing that matters the most, unless you win the lottery. It is the little things we do every day and the things we do a million times that effect our lives the most, not the one big thing we do.
Whether it is positive or negative the little things we do over and over will create the lives we live. No one ever got obese by eating one big meal, it is the little mouthful bites over and over that causes obesity. No one becomes financially secure by one big event. Oh they may hit it big by one great idea or product. They may write a bestselling book or a movie or become an artist. They might even come up with an awesome marketing plan for a product or service. But they cannot maintain financial security without doing hundreds of small things right every day. We have all heard of stories where someone made millions only to lose those millions from bad choices.
The wisest man ever said that it is the small foxes that spoil the vine. Most people do not lose their teeth due to a big accident; they lose them to microscopic bacteria that decay their teeth. You can’t save your teeth with one big brush one day or dental flossing one day. You save your teeth by flossing every day and by brushing 2 to 3 times a day for a total of 6 minutes.
I have what is called periodontal disease. That is a form of gum disease that causes inflamed gums. The bacterium gets in between your gums and teeth and slowly decays your teeth. I had a dentist tell me I had it and he referred me to a specialist. I had just lost my insurance and did not immediately go to the specialist. I did however start flossing every day. If I missed a day I would floss twice the next day, I never missed. I was always a good brusher and kept that habit up. I also used mouth wash twice a day. Periodontal disease is hereditary and good brushing alone will not help. My mom lost all her teeth by the time she reached 40, I was 36 at the time and it seemed that my teeth were perfect.
After 2 years of flossing every day, I finally went to the specialist. He had my records and x-rays from the dentist that referred me. Â They were shocked by what they found; they called in all the surgeons. They called the other dentist to confirm my file was correct. They asked me if I had gone to another specialist. My file was recommending me have oral surgery. They told me my gums were almost normal. They asked me what I had been doing for two years, I told them about my commitment to flossing and brushing.
They told me they had never seen anyone turn the disease around by just flossing, the theory was that it would work but surgery was a sure and quicker fix. I’m 55 and still floss every day and have my teeth cleaned every 6 months and still have all my teeth!
It is the thing we do every day. Whether it is investing money, exercising or building good solid relationships, it is the millions of little things we do every day that make a difference. It is better to do 6 things a 1000 times that to do a 1000 things 6 times.
Wily The Coyote would have caught The Roadrunner if he would have tried the same technique and strategy more than once. He never perfected his chase. The sad thing is, coyotes are twice as fast as roadrunners, and he could have caught him if he would have just chased him. But he chose to do 1000 things once.
